Trust & transparency
How we mark, how accurate it is, and how we look after your data
Schools, parents and students should be able to check our work. This page sets out our marking method, our latest accuracy results including where the marking is weakest, and how we handle data.
How marking works
Real exam questions, marked the way the scheme asks
Marked against the real scheme
Every question in the library (14,500+) comes from a real past paper with its official marking scheme. Answers are marked against what that scheme asks for.
Credit for method
Partial marks go to the relevant steps and working, even when the final line is wrong, and the feedback shows where marks were earned and lost.
Handwriting and diagrams
Students can type an answer or upload a photo or scan of their handwritten working, diagrams included. The marking reads all of it, not just a final answer.
The teacher has the final say
AI gives a fast first pass straight after an answer is submitted. Teachers see every answer, the working and the AI's mark, add their own feedback, and adjust the mark before results go out (rolling out now).
Accuracy
84% of question parts marked within tolerance
In our test on 12 October 2026, our live marking engine marked 750 answers (2,801 question parts). Fully correct answers got the right mark more than 99% of the time.
| Answer | Maths & Applied Maths | Accounting |
|---|---|---|
| Fully correct answers | 99.1% | 99.5% |
| Partly correct answers | 81.4% | 59.3% |
| Wrong answers | 74.2% | 80.9% |
| All answers | 85.0% | 80.7% |
| Average marks off per part | 0.59 | 1.21 |
By how the answer was given (Maths & Applied Maths)
- Handwritten scan89.8%
- Phone photo84.9%
- Typed81.2%
- Diagram with handwriting78.6%
Where it is weakest
- Partly correct Accounting answers are the weakest area (59%). Many Accounting marking schemes don't spell out marks for partial work, so the engine has less to go on.
- When it misses, it is usually too generous: on 12% of Maths parts and 10% of Accounting parts it gave more credit for method than the reference mark.
- So far we have measured Maths, Applied Maths and Accounting. Other subjects are marked the same way but haven't been through this test yet.
How we tested
250 Leaving Cert and Junior Cycle questions picked at random: 140 Maths, 60 Applied Maths and 50 Accounting. Each was answered three ways (fully correct, partly correct and wrong) as typed answers, handwritten scans, phone photos and diagrams with handwriting.
A part counts as marked correctly when the mark matches the reference exactly for parts worth 1–3 marks, is within 1 mark for parts worth 4–20, and is within 5% of the maximum for bigger parts.
Reference marks were set by AI against the official SEC marking schemes, not by teachers. Teachers are now checking a sample, and we will update this page with what they find.
We left out 610 parts where the stored marking-scheme data was incomplete, because there was no fair reference mark to compare against.

Who is behind UniDoodle
Born from university research into classroom feedback
UniDoodle (Visuality Limited) is a Maynooth University and UCD spin-out, supported by Enterprise Ireland, NovaUCD and MaynoothWorks.
In trials, nine out of 10 students who got an answer wrong and were shown where they went wrong using UniDoodle got it right the second time.
Dr Seamus McLoone, The Irish Times, 9 March 2023
UniDoodle is a case study in Knowledge Transfer Ireland's Annual Knowledge Transfer Survey 2025.
